NECK PAIN UPON MOVEMENT: DESCRIPTION AND POSSIBLE MEDICAL PROBLEMS
Whether you call it a charley horse, a cramp, or a pulled muscle, if you get a pain in your neck that doesn’t disappear after a few days, you’ll quickly discover that your entire life will be affected, especially if the pain makes it difficult to turn your head. Everything becomes difficult: driving, cooking, sleeping, even bathing.
As it turns out, the term “pulled muscle” is an accurate description of the condition. When a muscle becomes stretched beyond its normal capacity, the muscle fibers lengthen and become strained and may actually tear. Afterwards, you may feel a dull pain in your neck that may take a week or more to disappear completely.
Frequently, a pulled muscle in the neck—which is also called torticollis—is the result of a quick, sharp motion. The pain usually shows up later, so you may be unaware of the cause. Other causes can be holding your neck in an awkward position while you drive or sleeping on an unfamiliar pillow. Recently, however, I have also been seeing torticollis appear in weekend athletes who overdo their exercise routines.
